An alleged mafia boss in New York City should not be convicted just because he looks like a mobster, his attorney has said.
Joseph Cammarano Jr, who is said to be acting boss of New York's Bonanno crime syndicate, faces up to 40 years in prison on racketeering charges.
Cammarano, 59, appeared in court with slicked-back hair, a spotted suit and a silver ring. But his lawyer, Jennifer Louis-Jeune, pleaded with jurors to ignore his 'central casting' appearance, the New York Post reported.
She told the federal court in Manhattan: 'Looking like you stepped out of a central casting in a mob movie doesn’t make you a part of one of these groups. 'Don’t be distracted. Don’t let what you have seen in movies or on TV or whatever you have heard about the mafia cloud your judgement.'
Asked if he looked like a gang boss, Cammarano joked: 'No, but I've got the map of Italy on my face'.
Prosecutors told the court in their opening statement that Cammarano had committed 'crime after crime'.
Another former Bonanno mafia member gave evidence for the prosecution, telling jurors about a meeting where Cammarano had been chosen as the new boss.
Cammarano was one of 10 people indicted last year for their alleged links to the New York crime syndicate, although many of them have since accepted plea deals.
The Bonanno ring is one of the so-called Five Families which dominate organized crime in the city.
The indictment also listed the gang's colorful nicknames including 'Joe C' for Cammarano and other members including 'Grumpy', 'Porky' and 'Joey Blue Eyes'.
Cammarano himself is accused of being the 'acting boss' of the Bonanno crime gang.

Indictments Announced against 10 Mafia Suspects from the Bonanno, Genovese and Luchese Crime Families
Federal authorities indicted ten suspected members of the Sicilian mafia with extortion, loansharking, wire and mail fraud, narcotics distribution, and conspiracy to commit murder on behalf of the Cosa Nostra.
After several raids in the New York city area—including one at the “Xcess Gentlemen’s Club” on Staten Island—nine of the ten accused mobsters were taken into custody. Eight of the men worked for the Bonanno family, while the other two are members of the Genovese and Luchese crime families, respectively.
All of the suspects have been charged with racketeering conspiracy, according to a news release from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Each man faces up to 20 years in prison per charge.

Cammarano reportedly took over as leader of the Bonanno family in 2015, when the group was still rebuilding itself after a series of federal round-ups which took place in the early 2000s, according to The New York Daily News.
The 58-year-old Brooklyn native has pleaded “not guilty” to all charges.
Albert Armetta, known as “Al Muscles”, faces an indictment for assaulting a victim on Halloween night in 2015 “for the purpose of gaining entrance” to the Bonanno crime family.
Two other indictments include a gun-running operation and a scheme to defraud FEMA of US$ 80,000 in Superstorm Sandy recovery money, according to CBS New York.
Among the others charged are George “Grumpy” Tropiano, Eugene “Boobsie” Castelle and John “Porky” Zancocchio, captain and “Consigliere” of the Bonanno Family.

A Bonanno Mafia Crime Family Christmas
It was a "family" Christmas.
The newly minted Bonanno boss Joseph Cammarano Jr., hosted the crime family's annual Christmas party at an Italian restaurant on Staten Island that was voted one of the best eateries in the city by the Zagat guide.
The six-hour food fest was held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Bocelli Restaurant on Hylan Blvd. under the watchful eyes and cameras of the FBI and the NYPD, according to papers filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.
It was mandatory attendance for the crime family's administration, which included reputed consigliere Anthony Rabito and more than a dozen capos and soldiers, the court filings say.
The Old World-style restaurant is located in a strip mall, but the Zagat guide praised the upscale food at Manhattan prices.
A Mafia family Christmas party is held so the mob minions make a pilgrimage to the boss and give him an envelope stuffed with cash.
Former boss Joseph Massino used to hold the party in his restaurant, Casablanca, in Queens.
Cammarano, 56, controls the family's "day-to-day criminal activities," according to court papers.
Cammarano's promotion to acting underboss and street boss, exclusively reported Monday in The Daily News, is a sign that the beleaguered family is trying to rebuild after the prosecutions and defections of its members in recent years.
Bocelli's owner did not return a call seeking comment about the Christmas party.
